As part of my submission to the Airport of Airports project, I proposed to create a vision of what Changi airport’s website could bear for migrant workers travelling to work in Singapore. Migrant workers are work permit holders categorised under skilled and non-skilled sectors of industries like construction or shipyard. Foreign domestic workers perform their work in households and this is categorised as unskilled which also leaves them out of the Employment Act due to the indescribable nature of their job.

In my proposal, I have included sections such as ‘Working in Singapore’ that bear links (imaginary that is) about information like checking on one’s work permit status (a migrant worker needs this when working in Singapore) or alternative accommodation (for male foreign workers preferring a space outside of their current provided lodging which may not be suitable for them). I also included links such as communicating with loved ones to map out places that sell affordable pre-paid cards or internet cafes for a migrant worker who prefers to use Skype.

Most foreign workers have Sundays off as time to themselves. Often some engage in weekend activities to upgrade themselves in computer skills or English classes. Hence, the section under ‘Weekends in Singapore’ highlights some of the common activities available for choice. Organisations such as Migrant Voices (an arts group) hold drama workshops on Sundays in Little India that work with foreign workers of all backgrounds.

I have also included a section that carries hotline numbers as information resources one can seek for with questions pertaining to their employment rights and stay here in Singapore.

All in all, the vision of this website will need further research and more systematic information built onto it to make the website wholesome. For example, one can further develop the site to be translated into various languages. The website can further reflect stories on workers who are cleaners or working in the area around Changi Airport to share them.

Sha Najak delves in photography, poetry and fine arts as a hobby without being taught of it in school (studied Mass Communications). Her works have been exhibited online and in Singapore. Sha is an active member of society dealing with foreign workers issues, which she is learning as she goes. A former writer who still suck at English, she is currently President of the Migrant Voices society which is an arts group aimed to bring art to migrant workers in Singapore. Her trip to India brought back many images of the people through her eyes, this then culminated into an exhibition in Singapore.
